Hospital at Home in Athens
In 1995 the dream of a new type of home care was born in Athens: Advanced Hospital-at-Home to provide advanced health care services to patients at home, who otherwise would have to be treated in hospital. The challenge was to achieve this shift of services from hospital to home, without depriving the patient of the undisputed benefits of biotechnology and expertise found in the hospital environment. Portable medical devices enable the performance of a wide range of examinations at home, while information and collaboration between the virtual team and other contributors feasible and effective. Almost any patient whose condition does not requires prompt surgical operation nor meets the criteria for admission to an intensive care unit can be safely hospitalized at home.
The ten years of experience with Hospital-at-Home in Athens along with the increasing international interest and the worldwide acknowledgement, raised the need for expansion of the system outside the borders of the country. However, quality control was a supreme priority and solutions had to be found in order to maintain the same high level of quality in large-scale projects in different parts of the World. This perspective led to developing pioneer models and tools, which secure detailed quality monitoring of the everyday clinical practice regardless of the scale of the project. With these tools*, different mother tongues between stations are no longer a barrier, as these tools provide automatic translation. Moreover it is now easy to built expert systems, which can watch for any deviation from practice guidelines and provide on line support to doctors, maintaining high performance of medical practice. In a continuous effort to improve our standards, we have been implementing particular means, procedures, devices and tools, some of which are prototype and patented or copyright reserved.
